That’s not how I wanted my first win to come. Disqualification. It’s such an ugly word. And it’s a terrible start to my wrestling career. I want to quit. I really do. I mean, I’m not good enough to compete against the Level Ones and Terry Marvin’s of the world. I’m just Ron Rufio. I’m just the guy nobody will ever look at twice. But what about Jace Savage and Brian Hollywood? They came to me about NewGen Rising. I accepted their offer. They trusted me to be a part of their group. And I owe it to them not to quit. I don’t know what to do. But President Jeff seems to know what to do with me. He told me so in our meeting yesterday.
President Jeff: As long as I’m stuck with you, I might as well use you. Sally Talfourd is returning to APW for a special attraction on the Meltdown Finale and I’m hoping to sign her to another contract. I’ve decided to put her in a match against you, Rufio. That way, she’ll have an easy win to get her excited for a return to APW. You, Rufio, are fodder. Now get out of my office.
Wow. A match against the great Sally Talfourd. Sally Talfourd was the first female APW Undisputed Champion. Ron remembers Sally’s matches against Level One like they were yesterday. Pay-per-view main event after pay-per-view main event. Those two went at it like cats and dogs. Nobody challenged Level One like Sally Talfourd. And now, she was Ron’s next opponent.
As Ron muses over his big match on Monday, Aunt Beru calls him to the living room. She has something to talk to him about.
Aunt Beru: Sweetie, I know you have always dreamed of being a wrestler. And I’ve always tried not to spit on your dreams. But, honey, you’re really not that good and I’m afraid you’ll get hurt. I watched for years as your uncle had injury after injury over the years and how, as he got older, he couldn’t even put his shoes on without help because it hurt too much. I don’t want to see that happen to you, sweet boy. We can find another way to pay the bills. So please quit wrestling. For me.
Ron tells her he’ll think about it before heading to his room. He thinks about what she said. But one thing sings in particular. ”you’re really not that good.” Nobody believes in him. Not even Aunt Beru. Maybe she’s right. Maybe he should just quit. His original plan was to continue wrestling until he found a different job. But maybe he should just quit right now. And Sally Talfourd? No. Ron needs to get out while the gettings good. He can’t beat Sally Talfourd and he knows it.
Ron takes out his cell phone to call President Jeff. He’s going to take Jeff up on his offer from a couple of weeks ago and ask to be let out of his contract. But then he remembers something. It’s something his uncle said to him before they began their first wrestling training session together.
Uncle Owen: Ron, you’re only as good as you believe yourself to be. There will be people throughout your wrestling career that will talk down to you, that will say you’re not very good, that’ll try to make you quit. But, in the end, the only person that needs to believe in you is you. It doesn’t matter who does or doesn’t believe in you as long as you believe in yourself.
Uncle Owen believed in him. But, more importantly, it didn’t matter. The only thing that has been stopping Ron is his disbelief in himself. But Uncle Owen was right. Ron needs to start believing in himself and he will start to win matches. And he will begin with Sally Talfourd.
The theme to Hooked In plays.
Hooked In opens with Ron Rufio standing on a pirate ship. He begins speaking directly to Sally Talfourd.
Ron Rufio: This Monday night, on Meltdown, I face SallyTalfourd. I’m not going to deny that you’re a great wrestler, Sally. Your battles against Level One will live forever as legend. Your reign as APW Undisputed Champion, which, at the time, was simply known as the APW Championship, was impressive. But the question I’m going to pose over the course of this show isn’t about your accomplishments. The question simply is, is Sally Talfourd over the hill?
Sally, when you left APW six months ago, you were on top. You won most of your matches and even your losses were impressive. But who here has kept up with you in CRW? How many matches have you won, Sally?
The answer is five. You’ve only won a handful of matches in the last six months. Is that why you’re coming back to APW, Sally? You’re hoping that by coming back, you’ll get out of this slump you’re in? Sally, I respect the hell out of you but, really, I think it’s more than just a slump. I think you are over the hill. And at a young age too. I watched Happy Endings so I know that your body is breaking down. Maybe it’s time for you to hang up your boots. Maybe it’s time for Sally Talfourd to retire.
Like I said, I watched Happy Endings. I saw what you said about me. You have a problem with hardcore wrestling? You think I can’t get along without weapons? Guess what? This match isn’t a hardcore match. You’ll see how well I do without weapons. Just because I can’t string together a series of holds like my parents and my uncle were able to do doesn’t mean I can’t fight. And, Sally, you’re in for a fight because you happened to draw someone that’s unstoppable. Good luck. And my the best person win.
With that, the scene fades to credits.
