I got this one hot off the press last night but reading it wore me down too much for timely feedback, haha...
First of all, I have to say I expected this show to be a bit of a comedown - right after a PPV (and supershow) is always a hard time to come back swinging, and with half the roster 'calling in sick' as it were, I figured this one might at best turn out to be merely solid. I was completely wrong; this show was
awesome, I was riveted from the opening segment onward.
Knite/Duvall: my first comment to Jeff before he hit the sack after posting the show was that this opening was, indeed, awesome. I love Jenny Knite to pieces and if she doesn't end up wrassling on Overdrive I will totally riot. Anyway, there was great build into this, and I agree with Kash (this is gonna happen a lot btw) that Duvall has turned into a really intriguing character in his own right.
Jeff's follow-through on the GM announcement was also great, I hesitated and then I laughed. This was one of those perfectly-timed segments I could picture without any effort, and - like with the Knox/Envi match at Shockwave - despite knowing how this one ended I had my moment of doubt. Short, sweet, and all in all a brilliant start to the show.
Johnson/Mumf: No secret I'm an Adam Mumford fan, and I continue to be quietly intrigued by what JoJo has in the wings. This match only added to that... because I sure didn't expect an
only slightly glorified squash match. I actually went back and checked the RP board after this, because I'd been 100% sure I read and enjoyed a Joseph Johnson RP really early in the week. So: HMM! Not much more to say on this one, was over before it really began; the writing was fine and all, just not much of it. And did he just write himself as a 'jobber'?! HMM!
Johnny Rebel teaser: cool. I don't know tons about the guy bar his general reputation, and this was exactly what it needed to be. Obviously, more on this later! I always like the dirty glamour surrounding old talent returning, anyway.
Robina promo: YES. Right with Kash on this one. I doubt I'm the only person who's been a bit... concerned about Robina Hood lately, in an OOC sense. Coming close to no-showing pretty regularly, and dude, I hope your life gets itself sorted out and you can invest properly again, because I love this character and this promo cemented why. Not just saying that because I got a vitriolic shout-out - that I didn't at all fish for
- but yeah, this has me pumped again for the North American rematch. On the other hand, I felt a mild pang at the end when I realized I hadn't made the Robina/Madison match bloody as all get-out. Figured I was giving blood a rest this week!
Biggs/Styles: Biggs matches are always fun to read, and this is no exception despite a no-show. Shame that keeps happening, incidentally. Styles handed me my ass week one and seemed to be one to watch... as with Robina, I hope he can sort out whatever's keeping him and keep in high gear. Lot of build-up been had, more here, and would hate to see it wasted!
~Lots of stuff I wrote, who cares (thanks for the nice comments Kash!)~
Oops, although:
Jeff, Amy wrote most of our segment together, please credit her! Smith/Shione: Smith/Me! Not gonna make any secret of the fact I kinda dislike writing my own matches, and I'm always excited to see what other people come up with when they do. It always feels really flattering; especially when the person writing it is the frickin' bomb-diggity. Won't spend too long singing praises on this one, because at the end of the day it does still feel slightly egotistical (LOL my match was best because i r in it) but let me just say: THANK YOU EV. This was fantastic and I went to bed feeling bouncy and grinning after re-reading this one. Seriously didn't expect the win, either. I mean, non-title match or no, it's still frickin' A.C. Smith. Ahem. neway
Kash segment: Great! Love Kash's promos regardless, but the West/Shannon interplay here was fantastic. Not much more to say but that I enjoyed the hell out of it, and overall this guy was a stellar addition to Overdrive for this week.
~More stuff I wrote, dum-de-dum...~
Wait! *record scratch*
Holy shit, do I now get to say I co-wrote with the Level-One?!?! Seriously, this was an awesome surprise. I always skim the stuff I wrote - though sometimes I go back and read bits, since I never proof-read and I do forget moments that others reference - but as I skimmed Zing/KJE I thought I'd ballsed up the formatting or something and took my finger off the mouse-wheel. L1's commentary made this match great, actually, and gave it a stratospheric boost in significance. Also cool that KJE seems to be transferring over after the comments I made in my RP against her - always nice when stuff lines up that way!
Biggs segment: Yeah. More Biggs/Black Hand goodness. Though I've not got a huge amount to add on this, I will say; in expectation of criticism that this whole angle seems to not particularly be going anywhere, I'm totally down with the slow build and given the nature of e-fedding - and how hard it is to really BE totally dominant - I think essentially 'repeating' this segment is fine. Especially after all that's gone down, this served as a reminder and picked us back up where we left off. Helped it was well-written, as always!
Kash/Havok: Really entertaining match. The action was enthralling and exciting, and the length I thought was dead-on. My inner audience popped at the finish, and the new finishER - which is tres cool, by the by - and I was with Chase about Havok. Loving this guy, really interested to see where it goes and develops leading up to the next PPV. The ending was warm and fuzzies, too; gonna be a bit sad that Kash is going back to his natural habitat next week, but it's been a pleasure, dude. Only downside, and it's really just kind of amusing; half the commentary felt like Chase and Harvey had been blazing up. I think I might know why, eh wot.
Johnson/Havok segment: Er, what? Now he's flipping out and attacking a masochistic psycho backstage? Okay, sure. Can't call JoJo at all lately and that's pretty cool. Again, keeping the Havok ball rolling. If this hadn't been followed by something else much bigger I'd be questioning WTH it was post-main event, but this was fine. Is Johnson Black Hand now? The heck? Intrigued.
L1, et al, segment: I was almost beginning to think this was too long, and I was starting to skim slightly when Rebel turned up... which honestly just sold it all the better. I'm fairly sure I made not-entirely-dissimilar comments about L1/Gates on Shockwave, so I guess he did it again?! Anyway, loved what Rebel had going on, this sold Lester just fine but sold J-Reb like a champ in my view. Enthralling back-and-forth with an ending that I'm sure has left everyone leaning forward and squinting on their tippy-toes. I'm not always keen on segments to end shows, but this pulled us right into next week at the end of a fab show. Thumbs up.
Great work, everyone, and really looking forward to the future! I'm sure there was something else I meant to add here but I didn't make a note of it and now I'm just rambling. Wait, I just remembered. Clooooser. Come... closer...
CLIFF HANGER ENDING.
