Paging Mr Fevola, please proceed to the office of Dr Bowman
We open up in the reception area of the Galveston medical centre in Galveston, Texas. Fev, after hearing his name called proceeds to the doctor’s room bounding along as he normally does. He reluctantly pushes open the door to find Dr Bowman sitting with his back turned to Fev, before turning round and offers a handshake. Fev accepts as the begin their dialog.
Mr Fevola, it’s so good to see you again
Fev smiles and nods as he takes a seat
It’s just Fev now doc.
You know I like informality but I do have to keep a certain standard of professionalism. So how are you doing? It’s been a fair while since I last saw you.
Fev laughs as he nods in acknowledgment.
You’re right, it has been a fair while, yeah I’m not too bad but it’s been tough not having regular work since those doors closed back last year. A few speaking tours in New Mexico and Texas but that’s about it, you know what I’m like, I need to get my hands dirty to enjoy myself but I’ve just struggled these last few months.
Dr Bowman makes a few notes before he places a comforting hand on Fevs knee.
You’ve always been active Mr Fevola, ever since I’ve been your physician I’ve always tried to hold you back but you just keep ignoring me by taking stupid risks. Can you not find work in the mines or oil fields? Those places pay well and that will give you a place to stay active and fit. You’ve also got to remember to look after yourself, especially that neck of yours.
Fev shuffles in his seat as he instinctively rubs the back of his neck.
Yeah about that doc, You’ll be please find know I have another job, the contract is all signed and sealed but........I’m going back to the wrestling ring.
The doctor looks quite concerned as he flicks his pen between his teeth.
I hope you mean as a referee or some other non combat role Mr Fevola, you know that you’ll not get any medical clearance to compete from any doctor in the land. Your neck is just too fragile and not to mention the other injuries that you’re still receiving treatment for. I was concerned the first time you came to me and told me that you were going to wrestle. I know you got yourself some protection to cover up with but a rubber skin suit is not going to cut it this time. Your wounds need to settle, and I doubt that this extended time off you’ve had will be sufficient.
Fev looks down and shakes his head as he looks despondent as he speaks with a softer tone.
Don’t you think I know the risks? It’s not a decision that I’ve taken lightly. Every day I sit at home and look at my battered body and still wonder why those bastards took away an future that I could have had. Sport is the only think that I was ever good at, you know that and no regular job will ever cut the mustard. I need to do this doc, I really need to do this.
Dr Bowman shakes his head as the look of concern edges all over his face.
My neck feels great, feels really great. The hospital said that my neck has healed perfectly and I could return to normal physical duties soon.
Did you tell them your regular duties were to get chucked around a ring week in, week out?
Fev breaks into a cheeky smile.
You know I trust you doc, take a look at the latest x-rays and tell me what you think.
The doctor shakes his head before tapping away on his PC and printing copies of his scans. He disappears for a minute or two before returning back with those x-rays. He places them on his projector and begins to examine.
They’re right, your C3 and C4 look better now, not as good as before but they seemed to have fused nicely. It would be impossible tho to say how strong that mend is. In a few months and with plenty of strengthening work on those muscles around the neck then maybe I’ll be able to clear you to begin wrestling again but now, now I cannot be sure that you’re upto the rigours of active wrestling.
Fev scratches his head and laughs.
I go back to work on the tenth of this month. I fly to Japan tomorrow.
The doctor wipes his mouth as he continues to look at those x-rays
In an exhibition match?
No, full blown debut.
The doctor returns to his seat and takes a few moments.
Your opponent, what do you know of him? He is a guy that could do damage to you?
Fev shrugs his shoulders
Honestly? I don’t know too much about him, he is only somewhat new to the company also. What I do know tho that his is more of your high flyer type guy who prefers to chain wrestle rather than a power wrestler, he is shorter than me and weighs less than me so the chances of him dumping me on my head are pretty slim. From the information I can find on him, he likes to focus on the head with kicks and stuff. He seems to know his way around a ring but apart from that, he is a mystery.
The doctor sits up and turns around to face Fev, he taps his pen against the opposite thumb as he thinks.
What you’ve told me Mr Fevola is quite a concern, you know nothing about your opponent apart from he wants to attack the one part of your body that I am concerned about the most. How can you ask me to clear you for full time activity when you don’t even know anything about your opposition?
How many times did I face people I had no idea about who they were? They could have been people that ripped my head off, ate it and spat it out but I still fronted up. When you face the unknown you just cannot fear it. My opponent could be anything, he may destroy me, he could retire me but by the same token I could survive or even go on to win. Yeah sure I’m rustier than a rusty gate that has been in the rain for two years and a day but I know how to handle myself in the squared circle. It’s what I do. I know my limitations and I know how to defend myself, I’ve done it my entire career. I also know how to win. That is what I did best. This may be the first time I’ve competed for this company but this Atlas Adams faces the exact same issue with me, the unknown. He has no idea who I am or what I have done. Sure, I may have only competed in a regional company, but hell you have to battle to get anywhere, and we both know that I am a battler. I can assure you that if I feel I’m in any danger I’ll stop. Pass me for this one bout and then make a decision after. Give me this chance to get back to do what I do best doc, give me a chance to face this Atlas Adams guy.
The doctor wipes his right hand over his face as he shakes his head.
You know what you’re asking me don’t you? The position you have put me into? If I do this and you do get seriously injured again my career will be over. You’re asking me to stake my career on you
Fev looks rather cautious.
I know what I’m asking of you doc, but you have to trust me when I say I know I can do this. I can’t promise I’ll win but what I can do is promise you that come the end of the night that I’ll be fine. Let me prove to you doc that I’m able to do this and get my life back on track. Twenty years you’ve treated me and I’ve always proved to you that I can do what no-one ever thought possible.
The doctor once again shakes his head.
One match Fev, one match. Make sure that you protect your neck at all times and get to work on strengthening those muscles. We’ll see if you get permanent clearance next week, okay?
The scene fades as a look of excitement graces Fev, they continue their chat as the scene fades to black
