"Sally Talfourd presents ...".
is written across the screen, fades out, then
"In association with Action Packed Wrestling...".
is next to appear, holds, then fades out for
"Happy Endings T.V.".
Which finally fades to a shot of Sally and Shane out to dinner in Tokyo. They sit in a deathly quiet, swank restaurant, tables of two as far as the eyes can see. Both with a pristine white bowl in front of them, they are obviously waiting for their food.
[Shane] This is a really nice place. Thanks for the invite.
[Sally] Well, someone needs to pick up the cheque.
Sally laughs. She even gets a chuckle out from Shane.
[Shane] So you’ve been here before?
[Sally] Yeah, a few times. Back in the time I was working over here. But back then it would take a lot of shows to save up enough to get a full meal here.
Sally looks around, a glint of memory in her eyes and half a smile across her face.
[Sally] I guess I’ve come a long way. Back here … about to wrestle for the biggest title in the business, not just APW … it’s been a heck of a climb, hey?
[Shane] Well, I’m glad to have been part of it, at least for a little while.
[Sally] This is starting to sound too much like a farewell conversation, Shane. Are you thinking of leaving?
[Shane] What? No. You started it, talking about coming a long way and that.
[Sally] Hmmm, I guess I did then.
There’s a moment of silence where you can hear even the chopsticks tapping the bowls. Being the only two foreigners in the place, it’s not much of a surprise that there’s dead silence. Sally looks at her set pieces in front of her, adjusts the cup and the bowl, then looks up at Shane with a quizzical look.
[Sally] Do you think we’ve come to the end of the road?
[Shane] The end of what road?
[Sally] APW? Maybe the whole career?
[Shane] What? No. Why would you think that?
[Sally] It’s just … *Sally folds the napkin up that’s on her lap, putting it to the side of the table* it’s just this whole week. Its not been normal, I guess. I feel like I’m looking for something, but I don’t know what. Like, something I lost. Or maybe something I need. I don’t know. There’s just this looking feeling I’me getting.
[Shane] Well, you’re in a title match. Maybe winning that title would help relieve you?
[Sally] Maybe, but that’s the thing: I don’t know. I don’t know if that’s what I’m looking for.
[Shane] How long have you felt like that?
[Sally] Truthfully? I guess since we came back to APW. We both said we were going to come back to do something new and original and, well, the sort of stuff that we used to do. I guess I’m still looking for something. We went back to Asylum and that wasn’t it.
[Shane] What about the title? The Undisputed Title? You think that would fill the hole?
Sally can’t help but grin. Again, she teases the napkin. Again, she thinks back to the time she was Undisputed Champion before. Good times. Great times, in fact.
[Sally] Perhaps. Perhaps it would. And I’m not going to leave anything wanting, you know? I’ll do whatever I can to get it, I promise you that. And if I do get it, it’ll be a reign to remember, that I also promise. It’ll be a reign that everyone remembers. But I’ve got a feeling …
Sally fades off, maybe a little embarrassed to say what follows, or if it’s just something a little too painful to bear. Whatever it is, Shane isn’t one to go wanting.
[Shane] A feeling that you’ll lose?
[Sally] Yeah.
Sally’s lost the smile, lost any shine of memories. There’s a bit of sadness and a bit of pain across her face now. It’s like she’s come to a grand realisation - but one that’s most unwelcome. When you’re in the business for this long, you start to get a feeling for these things. You look at your opponents and you look at yourself. You see someone who can’t put a foot wrong, who seems to find success at every turn. You see Aubrey, and then you look at yourself. You see occasional wins against easy opponents. You see struggles and injuries and luck creeping more and more into your matches. Then you wonder if you can ever get back to the place where you once were.
[Sally] Nevermind. *Sally brushes the idea away from the air with a lazy hand* Whatever happens, happens. I’ll do what I can, and what I’ve always done, and nothing more. If that’s enough to become a two-time Undisputed Champion, then II’ll be more thankful than ever before. Most people are never lucky enough to be a champion once, much less twice. Even a chance to get into this match is more than I could ask, considering I’ve been on the sidelines for, like, six months.
[Shane] I don’t know about you, but I’d say that’s the biggest vote of confidence. Here you are, just coming back, and the powers that be knew you were good enough to get into the One Night in Hell main event - a chamber match, no less.
[Sally] Well have I ever disappointed in a chamber match for APW? They know I’ll put on a heck of a show, and do it like most others can’t. They know what I can do in there, and they know I’ll be a knockout. But a champion? Do they know if I’ll walk out a champion? Who could know that. Not even I know that right now.
[Shane] Did you know when you won the Undisputed Title last time?
[Sally] Sort of. I mean … I was the person that everything was just going right for, you know? I was in the best form of my life. I didn’t have any of these niggling injuries. I didn’t have any worries or problems or concerns floating around. I had a feeling that I could go into that match and do something that, well, do things no one else could do. This time?
[Shane] This time you don’t feel it?
[Sally] No, I don’t. Maybe a little, a tiny amount. But not enough to go into that match with any real confidence of winning. I’ve got confidence in myself, but not that I can take all of these people out. Not all of them at least.
[Shane] Well, let’s take them one-by-one. Who can you take out?
Sally goes to talk, but nothing comes out. She lets out a laugh of disbelief, then shakes her head, almost disapprovingly.
[Sally] Let’s be honest here, Shane: Why should I talk about my opponents? What can I say about them that is going to change anyone’s minds about anyone else? I mean, they say their thing, I say my thing, and where do we end up? Seriously. What’s the point of saying anything about these other people? They are who they are, I am who I am. We’ve all got a story and we’ve all got a history. Let’s leave it up to the fans to decide who they’re going to support.
[Shane] This is going to be a pretty boring episode then.
[Sally] Why’s that?
[Shane] Well … what’s left to talk about then?
[Sally] What’s left? Everything else! Shane, you watch an APW event and all you hear is one wrestler talking about how great they are and how pathetic their opponent is. The egotism in wrestling is growing to lengths that I never imagined it would grow to. I know I was part of it. I’m ashamed of that, to be honest. I think back to all the times I just trashed my opponent and talked myself up … I think about that and think how disappointing I must have sounded to the fans who just wanted to hear something different.
[Shane] But … that’s the business, Sally. It’s been like that since, well, as long as we’ve been doing it.
[Sally] That’s a lie, Shane, and you know it. Think about when we first started doing all this. Think about, say, when we first came to APW. We were interesting, man. We were doing things and saying things and recording things that no one else was doing. We weren’t getting confused for other randoms.
[Shane] Are we actually getting confused with other people?
[Sally] Maybe. Probably. I mean … everyone says that Aubrey is the next Sally. Is that really a good thing? Is it good that Aubrey can be considered the same as me? That might be great for her … but for me? Have I slipped so low that I can be interchanged with the likes of her? I used to be unmatched in wrestling skill. Pure skill, not the antics she does in the ring. I used to be renowned for being able to keep a match interesting and the crowd enthralled. And now people are saying she can do it as good as I can? Where did it go, Shane? Where did everything that made me stand out go?
[Shane] People move on, get older. You know that. And people, they’ve seen so much of you over the years; they’re not disappointed in you. They’re just used to you, yeah?
[Sally] I guess so. Then again, should it ever get that way? Should the fans ever be used to you? I mean, look at the predictability that’s overflowing in this match. Shadow. Mannie. What have they ever done that’s made someone sit up and say “Wow!” I mean, I might not be doing it all that much these days, but at least I did it more than once! The only time they’ve surprised anyone was getting into this match!
Sally chuckles to herself for a moment, just letting that sink in for a moment. Then, looking up at Shane, she brings that napkin back onto her lap.
[Sally] What are we going to do, Shane? What can we do about this?
[Shane] I don’t know; you like to remind me that you’re the brains between us.
[Sally] That might be true. But it doesn’t hurt to talk about things, I guess. I’m just thinking: What happens if I don’t win? What do we do after this? If an elimination chamber match and a pay per view main event and an Undisputed Title shot can’t get something out of me that’s new and interesting, what can?
[Shane] Maybe it’s a question of who?
[Sally] What?
[Shane] Maybe it’s a question of who can get that something out of you? Maybe you should think about people you have done great things with before?
Sally thinks about the idea, nods in agreement. It’s been done before, and it’ll be done again. But what about this match? Aren’t there people in it that could do great things with Sally? Yours Aubrey’s and your Terry’s. Even your Blade’s and your Shadow’s. Not your Mannie’s - let’s be fair. But there’s the talent in this match to do it. There’s just something missing, Sally thinks. Something that’s just not there to work Sally up. Maybe when the match comes around she will be. But, as you can see, there’s things going on.
[Sally] Never know - there might be great things in store in this match. I mean, there’s enough talent here to put on a history-making match. And I’m sure Aubrey is keen to not end up being a one-month, two-month, whatever-month champion. Everyone else? They’re in my boat. They’re thinking like me: How can I make the most of this. We’re all in this for different personal reasons, sure, but we’re trying to optimise our chances here. Blade wants to make the great return, Shadow wants the final recognition, and Mannie wants … well, he wants what he thinks he deserves.
[Shane] And what do you want?
[Sally] That’s a great questions.
There’s silence; no follow up from Sally. Shane waits, and waits again, but isn’t going to leave it there.
[Shane] Well? What do you want?
[Sally] I guess I want to go back to the old days. And I know that’s not possible, so I guess I’m interested in repeating the past in a new way, if that makes sense. Become Undisputed Champion, fight the great adversary, write an interesting piece of APW history again. But that’s all dictated by the match that’s coming. And I have to get through that before anything else.
[Shane] You worked out a strategy or anything?
[Sally] Yes, but is that what people want to hear about again? I talk about that every time I’ve got a match, and it’s not too hard to figure out, let’s be fair. What the fans really want to hear about is the future: What will I do to make their APW any better?
[Shane] And what will you do?
[Sally] Well, I guess I’d try to do things a little different to what’s happening now. The Undisputed Title could be a great force - a force for changing the way people see wrestling and see wrestlers. Aubrey has her hands on the title and war is she doing? She’s confirming every stereotype people have about people like her. Me? I don’t know, I’d like the title to be something that’s accessible to everyone. That’s not to say everyone gets a title shot, but surely the Undisputed Champion needs to give everyone a chance to test themselves against the best that company has to offer. The likes of Sentinel and Shelley and McDonald - people not in this match but have every right to be in a 5-star match. Everyone looks at champions these days and they think elitist and they think stuck-up. Well, those are two things I wouldn’t want to ever be thought of as.
[Shane] That sounds like a very different course of action.
[Sally] I know, right? I mean, let everyone sort themselves out as to who gets the next shot. That can be something management or the GM or whoever can sort out. What needs to happen is a chance to make sure every single member on Asylum gets to see how good they have to be if they want to climb to the top. And what better way than to give ‘the rest’ a chance at a match with a champion?
Shane nods at the idea, his mind going into overdrive at all the things that would result from that. The extra shows, the extra work, but the extra publicity and the thanks of the fans. It would certainly turn the idea of champion on its head.
[Shane] Even if you don’t become champion, that’s a great idea. You should pitch it.
[Sally] You think?
[Shane] Yeah, and I reckon they’d love it. You should sit down with the execs and that, try and see if you can’t try some time behind the scenes, if in front of the camera is getting tedious for you.
[Sally] Not tedious, I never said that. But it’s not a bad idea that. Maybe that would be a chance to refresh the view, you know? That’s if I don’t become champion, you know. Which, don’t get me wrong - it’s not something I’m planning on. I’d never throw a match. I’m just being … realistic? Pragmatic?
[Shane] It never hurts to have a Plan B.
[Sally] Isn’t that the truth. How many times have we ended up having to scramble because things haven’t gone to plan?
[Shane] Far too many times.
[Sally] When’s this food going to get here? It’s taking forever.
Sally looks around again, hoping to spot a waiter with some food, but she sees nothing. She turns her attention back to Shane and the conversation continues, whatever the topic is. But, that’s nothing concerning us now. Whatever they’ve moved on to is of no concern to us. The match now takes a back seat to the rest of life and their plans for, well, whatever else happens outside the ring. But so long as the match is coming (and not going) there’ll be a lingering thought in Sally’s mind. What will happen in the match? What happens after the match? What happens if she’s just not up to it anymore? All these thoughts running around. It’s quite unlike Sally. But, that’s what she’s dealing with. There’s a moment on Sally and Shane sitting at the table before the shot fades out and
Sally Talfourd
written across the screen, which in turn fades away as the episode comes to a close.
"Sally Talfourd presents ...".
