Don't get me wrong the man deserves respect for being real and shit unlike some people... (50 cent) its just I don't like his music whatsoever 50 Cent is as real as it gets. Unlike other rappers, he puts his all into every track. Top Three rappers of all time: 1. 2pac 2. Jay Z 3. 50 Cent HA

Tupac was a credible artist, but a hypocrite, which in my mind makes him overrated. However, no artist following him can compare themselves to him. That includes Jay-Z, and 50 cent (who shouldn't even be considered as good let alone great.) Yet, an opinion about a rapper is pointless. Like poetry, we all have our preferred topic and rhythm. There, to me, far better rappers than tupac. However, my taste is different.
The Beatles were influential, that is why they are so important. Now, being influential does not make you great. But it does give you a legacy. The Beatles opened doors for other artists across the globe to gain a larger audience. If it weren't for the Beatles popularity...lots of your favorite bands might have never found their sound, or been given an opportunity. Talk all the shit you want about them being overrated, but as a human being, and as a songwriter, Lennon is NOT overrated.
BDC, I disagree about Elvis. I think Elvis began his career as an influential artist. He was not the only one, Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and more like him all helped bring black rock, established by men like Chuck Berry, to a white audience. Which, in result, brought us artists like Wyclef Jean, Ben Harper, and various others. Now you may not like any of them, but the evolution of musical choice is very important. Because influence can sometimes be enough to introduce greatness.
An odd example of influence...Marylin Manson was influenced by Trent Reznor. Trent Reznor was influenced by Gary Numan. Gary Numan was influenced by David Bowie. Bowie was influenced by Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison. Iggy Pop was also influenced by Morrison. Morrison was influenced by Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud (a french poet). And had it not been for Wallace Follie, the man who translated Rimbauds poetry, and had then published in english...Morrison would, quite possible, never been an artist himself.
My point is...influence...regardless of whether or not you like that particular artist. In some way affects you. Because i guarantee, those bands or artists you don't like...have influenced artists you do. Giving you the joy that comes from that which you do like.
So be thankful, and not so quick to dismiss them.

see, there's a huge difference between saying someone is overrated and saying you don't like their music. John Lennon is basically my idol, and the Beatles are possibly overall my favorite band, but it pisses me off to no end when you try to have a serious conversation with someone about it and they act as if theirs no point to be made for the hundreds and thousands of other artists who could be and in some cases should be considered and acknowledged in the same vein... but I still think Tupac just plain sucks.

and going back to an obscure earlier post in this thread I consider the grunge period to be my golden age of music. I've recently discovered this side project from Layne Staley and friends and I've been smoking weed to this song now

You can argue, cry, spit, piss and moan all you want about Artists that don't get recognition. But if you feel so strongly about this, then print you some fliers containing the URL to their website and pass them out to people. Because regardless of whether or not you like some of the previously stated artists, they exists, and bitching about it existing only makes you look like a bitch. Enjoy your music, and ignore the rest. Having such a pointless opinion about something that really doesn't matter to you is such a waste of time. There are far greater things in life than wasting energy on things that don't really matter.

Morrison to Manson... what a fucking transition.
Oddly enough, though, Manson's coming to town in a couple weeks. I almost want to just sit outside the arena and watch the people filter in. Do kid's even listen to Manson anymore? I vaguely remember him falling off after "The Dope Show". It's like people saw the androgynous suit, and went "Yeah dude, you're fucked" and just stopped giving a shit. I'm really expecting the crowd to be late 20s/early 30s.
It's causing a bit of controversy around here, but nothing full blown. It's kinda funny that the church folks are STILL blaming him for Columbine. Fuck, he just sings songs like "Disposable Teens", it's you're fucking fault the kids felt disposable in the first place.
