‘Just put it there mate..’
In the entrance to the Bradley Center, Blade is directing a grumpy looking man with a stack of boxes in his arms. Set up is a small fold away table with two chairs set next to it; the man places the boxes down and begins to walk away in a huff.
‘Wait a second..’
Blade who is wearing a Santa hat reaches over and opens the top box, reaching in he pulls out a red and green t-shirt; printed on the front it says ‘RSM; 2nd in the Exchange’ He hands the shirt to the man.
‘Merry Christmas..’
The man looks less than impressed and hands the shirt back; he walks off with his keys jangling as they hang off his belt. Blade lets out an almighty ‘HO HO HO’ and proceeds with unpacking the boxes.
‘Some people just can’t get into the spirit, Christmas is all about giving and receiving yet some just sit on their fat asses and stuff themselves with mince pies and drink eggnog until their head hurts.’
‘You could say that I am in a very good mood today; recent weeks have been promising for me and the future is looking bright. Everyone, including my own mother thought that I would prove to be the weakest link on the last edition of Overdrive, but that match left little to the imagination and spilled out before a conclusion could be reached. You could say that I was mightily impressed with my performance as I didn’t let my team down, in fact you could say that I am overjoyed.’
‘It’s not easy being me sometimes; and I know I have a tendency to let people down, it’s in my nature because I am a fighter; I am not one to give up easily or at the first chance of failure. Some would say that I have received my Christmas present early already this year by winning and holding the APW tag team championship, and while I am all for early gifts, I particularly do not want to let this one go just before the festive period is finally upon us.’
‘Teaming up with Mr C.J. Gates has been a blessing, and without him I would not be the man who I am today; more than likely I would have broken my contract and found myself heading out of the APW and back into rehab for the festive season as it brings back too many memories of late night, alcohol and women; not that that was always a bad thing. My head has never been clearer and as Christmas Chaos approaches the frame of mind I am in is unbelievable and it is going to take a lot to bring me down from this high.’
Blade moves onto the second box which hosts a variety of merchandise more suited for the rest of the APW roster. We see some Branden Harvey baseball caps, Sally Talfourd cooking aprons and Level One face masks. Blade is arranging the merchandise around the table making sure anything to do with the Exchange Rate is at the front.
‘Christmas Chaos is going to be the event that makes or breaks me; as it will a lot of champion’s right here. For the Exchange Rate, Branden Harvey and Sally Talfourd, we are all going to defend our titles for the first time since we won them, a magnificent occasion as this will set in stone whether we are paper champions or true champions in our own rights; I for one am hoping it will be the latter. I can’t speak for anyone else, but Branden; it is now time for you to shine, you need to step up to the plate and finally show that siding with the Exchange rate has made you into a man; it is now time to realize your dreams and show the world what you are made of.’
‘Christmas is all about dreaming, and I can guarantee that the Mafia have been living in a dream sequence for weeks. Their heads have been in the clouds and they have been wishing that they were finally ready to step up to the plate and take a shot at the champs. Words have been spoken, blows have been exchanges, but when all is said and done it’s not over until that final bell rings and the winners have been announced.’
‘I would ask how they have been training; and I bet they have been working hard because for them to succeed they actually have to beat us; it doesn’t matter if they turn up and give it their best shot, because we all know that their best already isn’t good enough. Hitting the gym to try and improve on the little bit of talent they do have; bulking up so that they can look impressive in the ring, it’s all well and good, but it’s far from championship material.’
‘Rumor has it that they will target me because they still see me as their way to the gold, and that is where I am starting to relish the challenges that are placed before me; I am no longer scared of a challenge. Sure people will double team me and keep me in the ring as long as they can, wearing me down because they know I am not as sharp as I used to be, but I have the mentality now that I know what to expect; I am my own man, I am not a puppet.’
Reaching deep into the last box Blades hands emerge hosting two sock puppets, one on each hand. They vaguely resemble Young Mannie and JR Kingston. Blade opens and closes his hands appearing to make them speak; he laughs to himself but no one is around to share in his joy.
‘I have my own opinions, and as much as I am grateful for CJ’s help, he knows that I need to do things to prove to myself that I am worthy of being his tag team partner, but we have come on a hell of a long way from the start. What you have to remember is that we were thrown together and didn’t have time to prepare for what was to come; we are still learning and evolving as a team, and that it what makes it hard for teams to know what it coming. The in ring instincts we have bind us and have made us the force that we are today and that hasn’t come easy. Months of hard work and perseverance have put us on this level, and although I can’t speak for CJ, I know that we are both relishing this match and we are far from ready to relinquish these titles that we have in our possession.’
‘Young Mannie…’
‘JR Kingston…’
‘This is your time to shine, but I don’t believe that you are ready to capitalize on this opportunity that stands before you. In a way I am grateful that Diamante is tied up in his own personal battle with Branden Harvey as that leaves just the two of you to step into that ring and try and take what you seek. I am still out for revenge since you three brutally attacked me all those months ago, and it’s something that has not laid well with me. I suffered some bad injuries that night, and you left me thinking that all this isn’t worth it. I was a broken man, but bounced back; it is now time for you two to feel the same consequences.’
‘I have said that Christmas is all about giving and receiving, and I am more than happy to give the fans a match worthy of fame and put on a show that they won’t forget. We may be opening Christmas Chaos, but in my eyes that is a good thing; we are setting the standard for the evening, and I will want to give everyone a show that they can remember. I have never hated anyone, and Mafia, I don’t hate you; I have a severe disliking to you, a pain that just won’t go away, but after all is said and done, you will have no choice but to disappear from my sights, and that will be the best Christmas present anyone could give to me.’
‘I am looking forward to this upcoming match because I see it as the perfect way to end the year. I have never been this focused and finishing as a champion will leave everything on a high.’
‘2011 will be the year of the Exchange Rate’
‘C.J., Young Mannie, Kingston..’
‘Merry Christmas…’
Blade continues unpacking the boxes as the scene fades to black.
