Scene opens in a large, personal study. The study looks to be the size of a mid-sized home. One wall is covered by a book shelf, jam packed with more books then most libraries. Several large windows are visible at the far end of the study. Looking out the windows, beach front property is visible. Two expensive leather chairs are sitting in the middle of the windows, facing towards them. A small, round oak table is placed between both chairs.
An older gentlemen walks towards the chair on the left, carrying a small try with a fresh glass of bourbon, as well as a small bottle, which has clearly been opened already. The gentlemen hands the drink to an unknown man in the chair. After a brief conversation, the older man leaves, only with an empty tray. The glass of bourbon and bottle are moved onto the oak table.
The scene slowly adjusts, moving closer to the chair. Upon reaching the chair, “Superstar” Bobby Bodacious is seen from a side view, looking relaxed.
“Superstar” Bobby Bodacious
The best. Everyone that’s ever lived strives for this. The best. Everybody claims to be this. The best. Few people can truly achieve such a status. Name the field. Name the company. Name the person. Anywhere you go, anyone you deal with, the goal is still the same. Since the dawn of man, the goal has remained the same. The perks may change. The rules may change along the way. The competitors always change.
There’s a song by Tina Turner that says it beautifully. Simply the best. Variations of the song have been done by several performers, used by different teams, players and various other projects. Why? Because it symbolizes what everyone strives to be…..the best. Not many people will admit to it, but there’s a few basic reasons why we all strive to be the best.
I’ll start with the glory. Who in their right mind doesn’t want glory? Having everyone watch your every move. Getting everyone to hang on your every word. Every second of every day, having someone discuss all the great things you do. Name one person that doesn’t appreciate that. Name one person that doesn’t want the complete and total admiration of everyone. Quite simply, you can’t. Everyone wants the glory, the fame that comes with it. It’s human nature. We desire it more then anything else, including oxygen itself. If it meant not eating, most people would give up eating if it means having vast amounts of glory. Suppose that’s why many supermodels turn into anorexics. They’re willing to go to any extreme, just to have that little bit of glory in their field.
Let’s continue with wealth. You don’t hear of second rate people gaining much wealth, do you? If the Number Two guy gains any wealth, it’s because he rides the coattails of the top dog, pure and simple. Not because of anything he does for himself.
Usually, with glory, fame or wealth comes another important thing….something that all people desire, even though some refuse to admit to it. To put it simply, sex is a benefit of being the best. Don’t believe me? Who do you typically see getting the most women? The lazy, Homer Simpson wannabes? Or, someone in a position of power, prestige and glory? Take a look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, as an example. While many women accused him of sexual improprieties, others quite willingly participated in those escapades. Why? Who doesn’t want to be with someone successful? He married into the Kennedy family. It says something when a successful man, such as Schwarzenegger can be involved with a woman from an equally successful family. Not many people will claim that Shriver was anything other then successful. In her family, everyone is a part of greatness.
Wayne Gretzky. Babe Ruth. Bill Gates. Warren Buffet. Barrack Obama. They’ve all achieved greatness in their fields. Like them or hate them, they’ve all achieved greatness. They’ve all become big players in their respective fields. They’ve all staked their place in history. As everyone knows, history rarely acknowledges the second best. The losers are acknowledged merely as footnotes, only to be referenced when hyping up the top man. History only remembers those that are the best, pure & simple. History only cares about the best. Just look at your history books if you don’t believe me. See how much glory assistants get, as opposed to the head guy. See how many team captains get the credit, despite the teammates doing a bulk of the work.
Why do I bring all this up? Is any of this even relevant to what I’m doing? You’d better believe it’s relevant. Not only is it relevant, but it’s the main point for everyone in APW, especially those of us that are actually competing at Test for the Best. APW is holding an entire tournament based off this very concept. Eight competitors, all out to prove that they’re the very best in APW today. Winning such a tournament, no matter what promotion you work for, puts you into a very important position in that company. Most people that win such tournaments move on to bigger and bigger things, going on to win numerous titles in that promotion.
Winning a tournament like this makes any one of us the top challenger for either of the world titles in APW, a goal that Asylum and Overdrive wrestlers all strive for. We’d be fools to turn down any opportunity that comes our way. Doesn’t matter how it comes. We all want that gold. That’s where the big money is. That’s who the fans care about the most. APW revolves around the world champions, not the rest of the schmucks that work in the company. These are the people that earn the most money for the company and themselves. These are the people that get the most women, or men, in some cases. Just to be in the record books with the best, even just once, some people are willing to risk life and limb to get the job done.
I, like the remaining seven competitors, have my motivations. Money and women aren’t such an issue. I have enough money and women, as it is. I don’t need anymore, currently. Prestige, well…..everyone could always use more. For me, it’s more about personal glory. It’s about accomplishing something that, after all these years in the business, is finally within my reach. Despite all the tough competition that I’ve faced, despite having a failed promotion of my own, I’ve never fully reached any personal glory in this business. Never ran a successful promotion. Always ended up in promotions with such tough competition, I was never able to become a champion. No matter how good I was, no matter how hard I worked, no matter what I put my opponents through, I could never pull off the truly big wins.
Come Hell or high water, it’s going to happen at Test for the Best. I’m going to destroy each and every person that gets in my way. Four opponents, total. Four people that I must destroy to obtain my goal. Four people, all of which want to stop me from finally making it to my destiny. Which four people that end up getting in my way are unknown, unknown except for one man. Only one person, I’m guaranteed to face. At his best, he can truly be one of the greatest competitors in this business today. That’s assuming he’s bringing his best into the tournament.
With everything that’s going on, that could be pretty hard to pull off. Let me see if I’m getting this right. I’m facing Blade as the first round opponent. This is the same man that, in the same general time frame, is also participating in a huge title match for another promotion, an inter-promotional alliance, of sorts. I fail to remember who was holding such a match and quite simply, I don’t care. It has no bearing on my short term future or how I’m going to beat you like a dog, except that it’ll make it easier for me to beat you like a dog. After all, Blade will be rather distracted with projects taking place outside of APW. His heart and his mind won’t be on APW or the Test for the Best tournament. His success in that other title match might bring prestige for him, should he be successful, but it won’t help him advance around APW in the long haul.
That big win, if he gets it, will be relevant mainly in the inter-promotional alliance. APW, while gaining some benefit, won’t see a long term benefit. APW will see some bragging rights, but that’s about it. Blade will have a few bragging rights around here, as well. Bragging rights are hardly worth the risk, considering how much work you’ve got to put into everything. Trying to win and defend that title, trying to win the 2011 Test for the Best, trying to win an APW championship….all of this could be more then you could handle, Blade. Are you sure you’re really ready for so much work? You really feel like taking on such a workload? Are the benefits really worthwhile?
As my tag partner would attest to, you’re taking on a huge gamble. The benefits, the rewards will be amazing, should you pull everything off. You’d truly be the man, truly be the best if you could succeed. But, as my partner would also tell you, spreading yourself too thin is just as bad as putting all your eggs in one basket. A smart man wouldn’t gamble everything on one hand. Nor, would a smart man spread himself so thin that he’s unable to do anything right. If you want any chance of actually beating me, Blade, you damn well better have your head in the game. Your attention better be on me, 100%. Any less will be absolute disaster for you. Me, personally, I don’t care what causes your failure. All that matters to me is that I turn this Blade into a simple plow. So humiliated at combat that you’ll want to turn to another line of work. Maybe instead of being a real wrestler, you could become one of those has-beens that posts random and ridiculous videos on Youtube, while still trying to relive your glory days. That’s assuming you ever had glory days, Blade.
It’s going to be a lot like going through cheap, disposable, crappy razor blade that you might buy at a Walmart. Good for a couple uses before throwing out. Walmart is probably considered high class, compared to the dollar stores that you normally hang out at. That’s how low class you are, Blade. Nothing more then a cheap, imitation wrestler. Why you’re even in this tournament is beyond me.
I should actually be focusing my attention on someone else, someone like Shane Borderland or Roxy Rayner. God, that match has got to be hard for the poor fans to watch. As a wrestler, I find it hard to tolerate a match like that. Don’t know how or why the fans would plunk down their money for a shitfest like that. Seriously, I can just pay these two off to just walk away from the whole damned tournament. I could pay them a small hunk of money to walk away and not torment me or any of the fans. The fans, on the other hand, are paying what little money they have, to watch crap like this. Instead of clothing or feeding their kids, they’re paying out the last of their food stamps & WIC money to watch this match?
Borderland, seriously? This is a man that got lucky the last time around. Wait, scratch that. During our one and only encounter, Borderland didn’t even beat me. He beat a second opponent of ours under triple threat rules. As much as he tried, Borderland wasn’t able to pin me. He wasn’t able to make me tap. He had to get some moron pinned, after I did the work for him, just to make himself feel like he’s an actual ‘rassler. If I’ve heard correctly, Borderland and Roxy are still undefeated here in APW. Undefeated until Test for the Best. Only the best can truly win such a tournament. Getting easy matches won’t help either one of them out. Taking advantage of someone else’s work won’t help. Doing some of the work themselves will be necessary if they’re going to win.
Personally, I’d much rather face Borderland in my second round match, if for no other reason then to show him that he could never really beat me. Getting the win in a triple threat match isn’t the same as legitimately beating someone one on one. As much as you may like to think this, you’re really not as good as I am Shane. You’re not in my league, even on my worst day. You don’t even deserve to be in the same promotion as I am. Since I’m stuck with you, I’ll make sure to keep my interaction with you as short and as sweet as possible. Not really for your sake as it is for my own. Just to prove that you aren’t really that good.
You and Roxy, well, both of you will have something in common by the end of the night. Both of your undefeated streaks will end at Test for the Best. The question remains, who can make their streak go one more match? Which one can go one more match before suffering humiliation? Who wants to make it far enough to face me?
At least if you lose to me, you or Roxy can claim that you lost to APW’s One True Superstar…… “Superstar” Bobby Bodacious!
Bodacious slowly drinks his bourbon, enjoying every little bit of it. Part way through his glass, he refills his glass. As he does this, the scene slowly fades out.
