"Sally Talfourd presents..."
is written across the screen, fades out, then
"In association with Action Packed Wrestling"
is written across the background, fades out to something much more mundane than the last episode. It’s inside a boring old hotel room. I guess we can’t always be sunning ourselves on the beach. We have to work every now and then. Sally is laying across a couch, her hair spilling over the armrest as she stares up at the ceiling. And across from her, sitting in a lounge chair and reading a magazine which he is on the cover of, is Havok.
[Sally] …so I had to take the guy to the hospital. The doctor said he’d never seen on swell up so big before. I was sure it was going to burst.
[Havok] Is that really what you wanted me to come here for?
[Sally] Actually, no. I wanted your insights into my match. You know, bring in another perspective or something. Maybe I’m missing something?
[Havok] You’re wrestling Kate…something. It’s for a spot in the elimination chamber. It’s a wrestling match. What else do you think you need to know?
[Sally] I need to know that you’re not thinking about doing anything stupid.
[Havok] What on Earth do you mean?
[Sally] Well, let’s say you’re watching backstage. *Havok nods* And you see that I might be on the back-foot, you know? Struggling a little in the match. I don’t want to see your face in the ring, beating down poor Kate because you think I’m about to lose. *Havok rolls his eyes*[/b] Seriously! You better not think about anything like that. That’s what other teams do. That’s what our current champions do. Not us. We play by the book and we do the right thing. [/color]
[Havok] Fine.
[Sally] Even if it looks like Kripps is going to get involved- you wait until he’s actually broken a rule or laid a hand on me or something. But don’t you start the trouble. We’re the good guys.
Sally glares at Havok, who tries to avoid eye-contact. Eventually the silence and the staring become so unbearable that Havok bows his head in defeat.
[Havok] Ok, fine. Not until they break the rules first.
[Sally] And they might not even break the rules. They’re, you know, good guys too. They want to be like us: Respected. But if they’re going get into the minds and hearts of the fans then they’re definitely going to have to make a few changes. If they want the respect and the reverence that they have asked for, then they have to do something about their appearance.
[Havok] What’s wrong with how they look? Kate’s not too…you know…
[Sally] I don’t mean how they look. I mean how they present. What they come out with from their mouths and the ideas that they seem to kick around. I mean, think about this: I didn’t exactly say anything disparaging about Kate. I didn’t slag her off like she was a common so-and-so. I paid her as much respect as anyone in her position deserved.
[Havok] And what position is that?
[Sally] Well, she’s never won a match here. She’s never main-evented a show here. And she’s yet to get into a title match, much less her hands on an actual title. That’s her position. And I showed her as much respect as she’s earned. Well, no. I showed her more respect than that. I simply laid out what it would take to earn a place in the chamber match. Then what it would take to win the championship that five other people will be trying to keep her form. And then, finally, what it would take to succeed in APW. And what did she do? She didn’t thank me or anything- she just tore into me! *Sally sits up, all indignant and that* Can you believe it? Ok, I said she wasn’t as good as me- but she should have just taken that in her stride and proved that I was wrong come the match. Whenever someone reacts to the things I say the way she did, I instantly think I struck a nerve.
[Havok] You think she thinks you’re right?
[Sally] That’s exactly what I’m thinking now. I mean, if she knew she was better than me, why would she say half as much as what she did? If she thought it was my ego talking, why did she try to prove me wrong with words? *Sally leans in closer to Havok* Because she doesn’t have the actions to prove me wrong. She has to rely on those words. She has to hope they throw me off my game- because she knows whatever she does in the ring won’t. I’m going into this match knowing who I am. So is she. She knows exactly who I am, and she’s afraid. Afraid she can’t step up to the plate. Afraid she can’t go move-for-move with me. Afraid that she doesn’t have it in her to beat me. You’re only ever afraid in a match like this: When you know the truth is scarier than what you can do. The truth is she doesn’t have it in her to knock me off. Her little rant just showed the world that that’s the truth. I mean…*Sally rests back, looking back up at the ceiling*…look at me! I’m the most technically proficient wrestler APW has. Kate wants to think she’s pretty good at the whole chain-wrestling, move-for-move and hold-for-hold, classic style. And from what I’ve seen, she’s not half bad. We at least agree that the whole wrestling industry needs to take a step backwards, rather than a suicidal run towards the cliff to jump off to land the biggest splash.
But Kate knows, deep down, that for as good as she might be in terms of pure wrestling, she’s about to face someone who’s got a whole lot more of her same skills. I’m here, what? Seven, eight years into my career? Having won each and every title not with the strong style, not with the high-flying style, not with the hardcore style. With the technical style. I’ve got to where I am- into the elite group of wrestlers that exist in APW- by wrestling my way there. Not doing anything less than bringing a pure, technical, meticulous approach to every match. Now Kate might have the skill advantage to some of those crazies out there who don’t know and wristlock from an ankle lock. But when it comes to me? She knows she doesn’t have the repertoire get past my defences. What she considers as her strong points I’m already seeing as a weakness for her. Her offence? It’s going to quickly be her problem because I’ve got a reverse for when she comes at me. I’ve got a way out of every way she can hold me. And I’ve got a counter to any move she can pull out. So then what? DO you think this pretty young thing has it in her to go counter-for-counter and reverse-for-reverse? I doubt it very much.
Of course, I can already hear her saying it now: Ego ego ego. That this is my ego talking. I’m blinded by my own arrogance or something. Truth be told, I might be egotistical, but that’s hardly a weakness. I know myself, and I know how good I am. With an ego, you back yourself. You know you can do something. You believe in yourself enough to get a job done. My ego is hardly a weakness, Kate. My ego gives me the same self-belief that got me the APW World Heavyweight Championship. That got me through the elimination chamber. That got me into the elimination chamber! You can try and harp on about it, but the fact remains that I know myself better than you do. And when you think I’m being egotistical, I’m actually being truthful. When I say I’m better than you, it’s because I know I’m better than you. When I say I’ve got the moves to out-wrestle you, it’s because I know I’ve got the moves to out-wrestle you. And when I say I’ve got this match won, I know I’ve got this match won. Ask anyone else who’s had to wrestle me- any assessment of me isn’t so clear-cut. Lester thought I was just a woman, and I beat him. Veterans in this business have thought I was self-absorbed, and I’ve beat them. And now you think I’m egotistical, and I’m about to beat you. *Sally looks over to Havok* That’s not the ego talking, right?
[Havok] Not at all. It’s common sense talking. If someone like Kate can beat you, you might as well retire tomorrow.
[Sally] Yeah, you’re right about that. I mean, look. I’m not trying to run poor Kate into the ground, but if someone with as much skill and as much experience and as much in-ring smarts as me can’t win a match like this, I’ve clearly been left behind by the next batch of wrestlers. And if that’s the case, I’m not above admitting that it’s about time I moved on. But I’m not throwing down some threat here purely and simply because I know I’m not about to lose. Kate needs some more APW experience; some more APW initiation. I’m more than happy to give that to her this week. Let her know what the standard is of the top tiers. What the world champions in this company are like. Because you don’t become a champion here without facing off against some damn good competition. I mean, I had to take on Lester to get the belt. CJ Gates had to take on me to get his opportunity at greatness. If Kate wants her shot at greatness, she’s going to have to earn it the hard way. Not skimp her way through. Not get it handed to her. And certainly not get it through any nefarious means!
[Havok] You would be alluding to Cripps, yes? And the possibility of him swaying your match.
[Sally] Yes…but only alluding! I’m not going to dare say that the Seagulls are about to start stomping holes in each and every person in their way. They are more respectable than that. But it’s a pretty cheap way forward if he wants to get involved. No one is going to respect Kate in Cripps gets her there. And no one is going to respect Cripps is Kate helps him out either, that much is true. They have to get their on their own. They have to earn their own respect. Which, really, is what this match is all about- respect. *Sally sits up again, pulling her hair over one shoulder* How much does Kate respect me and what I’ve done? If she does respect me, she’ll bring everything to throw down in the match, but come at me with an appropriate amount of caution. How much do I respect her? If I do, I’ll make sure that I go into that match firing on all cylinders because that’s what she deserves. And how much do we respect the opportunity we’re being given? If we do respect that, then this match is going to be tough, hard-fought, but fair.
[Havok] We’ll know if it’s a fair match if you win.
[Sally] If I win, it will be fair? Or if I lose it will be fair?
Havok squirms, a little uncomfortable. Again he can’t meet Sally’s stares.
[Havok] No comment.
[Sally] Havok!
And with that the scene fades out on an irate Sally and a Havok in need of rescuing. There’s a long hold on a blank, black screen, then
“Sally Talfourd”
is written across the screen as the episode comes to a close.
