"Sally Talfourd presents..."
is written across the screen, fades out, then
"In association with Action Packed Wrestling"
is written across the background, fades out to a shot of the Tokyo skyline. The buildings glisten with a radiant glow of cleanliness that you only get in an Asian country. If you hate germs, this is the place to be! The camera pans across, then around, we find we’re in a hotel. And isn’t it a stark contrast to the order and rules outside. There’s clothes strewn around, the bed is unmade, and there’s a waft of steam floating up and out from the bottom of the bathroom door. There’s the sound of a door unlocking, and a wall of steam floats out of the bathroom. Out saunters the stunning and attractive Sally Talfourd, dressed down in some training gear, her hair tied up in her towel to dry off.
[Sally] Wow, Shane, you went out looking like that?
[Shane] What’s wrong with this?
[Sally] You look like a homeless person. You know, if you’re going to be following around a world champion again you’re absolutely going to have to dress a bit neater.
[Shane] You’re that confident?
[Sally] Well, fortune favours the brave, so they say…whoever ‘they’ are. I mean, I know I need to win the match and I know it’s going to be one hell of a task doing that. But I know I can do it. This time last year, what was I doing? I was getting ready to go into my first ever chamber match. And, last year, I won my first chamber match. I can’t say that I’ve already got it won, but I think I have a right to be slightly confident, right?
[Shane] You’ve probably earned some right, yes. Then again, it’s new competition this year. And you’re a year older…
Sally glares at Shane. How dare he say anything about being older! She slowly brings her hands up to unravel the towel, still staring daggers at Shane.
[Sally] Yes, it was a year ago. But in between that time I’ve changed. I went from world champion to now. And I went from main eventing Rasslemania to nothing. I’m not above saying that I’m not in the same place as I was last time. I’m not. But I am woman enough to recognise that, you know, I was able to do it before so I should be able to do it again. I outlasted the pain and the torture last time, surely I can outlast it again.
[Shane] Yeah, about that: Why are you going through it all again? You’ve proved yourself once, surely there will be a number one contender match after this which you could win and get a title shot then?
[Sally] Hmmm, you make a compelling point Shane. *Sally, who has been folding up the towel in her hands all this time, suddenly launches it at Shane. It hangs over the camera for a moment before he pulls it away, Sally shake her head in disappointment at him* Yeah, can you imagine that, sneaking in after someone has busted their ass to get it. It’s why I fought so hard against Lester when I defended it against him- the person who wins it at One Night will have foughtso hard for it that they’re not about to give it up over some nothing match.
[Shane] But why are you going through it all again? It’s not good for your career…
Sally stops to think. Here gaze travels off to a time not long ago. When ‘Sally Talfourd’ was up in lights everywhere. When her face was the face of APW. When people lined up for hours and hours just to catch a glimpse of her. And while it may well have been so long ago, it doesn’t seem so far away right now…
[Sally] I have to go through it again, Shane. I have to because I want to. I want to go back to the days when I had everything. The belt. The fame. The career that was unstoppable. I want that because APW needs that. APW needs a fresh injection of, you know, hope and faith. Who brings that? Rico? Kash? People are cheering me on because they want me to win…but they especially don’t want the alternatives to be the champion. Can you imagine what Asylum would be like if Manhattan White or Mike Morrison were the top dog? Save me now! Me and the fans, we’d have no reason to believe that Asylum would go anywhere. The show is only as good as its champion, and the champion would suck! The main reason anyone tunes in to an APW show is to see the main event. Who is the contender and who is the champion? When the belt is hot, the show is hot. How many people do you think Tommy Knoxville versus Jason Kash would pull? Their main demographic would forget that there’s even a match with them in it!
[Shane] What did you mean ‘had everything’? Doesn’t APW have everything whether you’re behind the title or not?
[Sally] No, Shane. They’re missing out on the best competition. If the champion is second-rate, how good is that match going to be when someone else comes along who’s also half-rate? No, APW deserves better than that. The fans deserve better than that. I’m going into this match to get back to the top, because that’s what’s right. And normally I’d say that I’d do just about anything…but this time I really will have to do just about anything. A chamber match is hard enough by itself. But with these, you know, added bonuses like weapons and whatnot, I think I’m going to have to do a few things I’ve never done before. I’m not really known for, you know, weapons and hardcore stuff. That’s the Rico and Morrison and Kash style of things. The style where you don’t need to have a full brain or any wrestling skills to win. Me? I’ve got oodles of talent and skills and wrestling. But when it comes to this? That counts for only half the match.
[Shane] The other half comes from crazy?
[Sally] Well said, Shane. The other half comes from crazy. Weapons and violence and whatnot. You know, last time I came in first and I knew it. This time, I have no idea- and I love it. Because I’m holding out hope I can come in about half-way if only so that I get enough match to really earn that title, but keep away from the stupidity and violence that will no doubt accompany this match so that I don’t walk out with a broken body! Those loons can knock each other out all they want- I’ll win this match the same way I won it before: By wrestling. By going hold-for-hold against all these men who think they’re bigger and better than me. They might well be bigger, but who can seriously believe a bunch of guys who’ve been here for five minutes can beat one of the longest serving that APW now has. But the funny thing is, when I’d been in APW for as long as Morrison and White, I’d already made a mark on APW with one of the hottest feuds of my career put to bed. When I’d been here as long as Kash and Knoxville, I’d won the Test for the Best tournament and had two world title matches, and had won the title! And when I’d been here as long as Rico, I’d risen all the way to the top of our company, then come crashing down. So when I hear these supposed wrestlers talking about me with the lack of respect that I’m entitled to…well, I just get even more determined to walk out with the belt all over again.
So to get around all that, it’s about sorting people out for their weaknesses. One by one, it’s easy to sort them out. When you’ve been around this business as long as I have, you start to find it a little bit easier. You start with someone like Mike Morrison, a guy who is in no way shape or form ready for a match like this. This is bigger than an Asylum main event. A hundred times as many people will be watching. This is the big time, and we’ve got a small time player. He’ll ruin his own match. I’ll just have to put him away when it gets to the end of the match. Manhattan White, too, isn’t ready for this. Ok, he’s had some more experience. And OK, he’s probably got a bit more in him to last longer. But that just puts him next in line to eliminate him. These two, they’re looking down the barrel of a loss. Not because they deserve it, but because they don’t deserve the win. They’re just not ready. Some of us are, some of us take time. And you two…you two are going to take some more time. I’ll be more than happy to give you a chance at the spotlight when you are ready, but for now it’s my duty to roll you two out of the match. The fans want, and deserve, the best of the best to be the champion. And, look, let’s face it: You two aren’t the best yet.
[Shane] So Rico would be your competition then, considering he’s got the belt? He must be the best, right?
[Sally] Well, he’s good- I’ll give him that. He’s better than that Jimmy Whoever guy who had the belt before him. But he’s had a pretty easy run for his little stint as champion. Who has been his serious challenge in all this time? Who was his Lester Only? He’s never had one…until now. Now, he’s got me. And for as great as Rico is on his best day, he’s no Sally Talfourd. I hate to brag…*A scoffing sound comes from behind the camera*…but I know that on even an average night I can put on a show and wrestle a match better than Rico could dream of. The fans have got some value out of him, but I’ve never heard a fan say that Rico is the next legend of APW. They’ve never spoken about him the same way they spoke about me. And it’s probably because they don’t see the pure, unrestrained talent that wins chamber matches in him, the same way they saw it in me. So yeah, while Rico might have a belt saying he’s the best right now- he isn’t really the best, and he knows it.
[Shane] So Kash and Knoxville? Do they stand a chance.
[Sally] In a match like this, everyone stand a chance. The real question is, do they have what it takes to close out a match? And we’ve all seen enough of both these guys to know they don’t. Knoxville is about as good in the ring as any other mid-carder. But he remains just that: a mid-carder. He’s good for a second-tier belt the likes of a Harvey or a Brown might hold. But now we’re talking big-time stuff, and Knoxville isn’t made with the right ingredients for that. He's got a whole different make-up in him, and it's not the kind the champions of APW have. This company needs people that the fans and the roster can respect as champions, not people like...Knoxville. He deserves the place he has now, certainly no better. And as for Kash? Well, he’s only known around these parts for his tag belts these days. And we all know that it was his partner that got him that ‘glory’. And now his partners got himself kicked out of this company! I’ve seen come crazy stuff go down in APW, but to see someone get kicked out!? He must have really crossed a line. But the person this really hurts is Kash- he’s now got to do it on his own, pretty much. He will be so distracted and so occupied with his new partner that how the heck is he going to focus on the chamber match? The only reason he’s in the match is because he got some attention with that half-belt he’s got. And he didn’t even get it himself! Now we all get to see what sort of a wrestler he is. And I can already predict the sum-value of his skills: Zero.
[Shane] And your chances?
Sally lets out a cute little laugh.
[Sally] I don’t think you can count that high. If I'm only measured against the other men in this chamber- men that I could handily beat in any other match one-on-one, how exactly is it going to be harder when they have to worry about each other, as well as me? I mean, when they have just me to worry about, then what chance do they have? But now Kash has to worry about Knoxville, White has to worry about Rico, and Morrison has to worry about getting out the chamber! On top of all that the weapons. On to of that the chamber itself. And then the nice, little, cherry on top: Me. These men, who really aren't ready to be in a match like this with me, really have no clue as to what's in store for them. They'll only have an idea after an hour, when they've all been eliminated and I'm standing there with the belt all over again.
