The most recent edition of OVERDRIVE saw the startling revelation of the new General Manager, but more importantly - at least in regards to the immediate future of one 'E-Starr' Jake Ruby - was the cryptic emergence of a new force within Action Packed Wrestling.
Introduced solely as a wrestler that is focused upon obtaining the APW World Championship by a woman with an identity nearly as shrouded as the man she spoke for. Just what is poor Jake Ruby in for at MAYHEM this coming Sunday evening in Atlanta, Georgia?
An eye-opening, world-shattering, life-threatening, career-ending ride of a lifetime, that's what!
"Kark! I can't believe the video isn't working. How am I to reveal myself to the world if there's no video to go along with this?"
The voice is unmistakably male and bears a heavy, though extremely difficult to place, accent.
"Don't worry about it, V. You can still put your thoughts into words and direct them toward..."
There's a shuffling of papers that can be heard as the female voice - the same one that belonged to the face on the big screen on Monday, to be sure - apparently was looking for the name of her man's opponent at MAYHEM.
"...'The E-Starr' Jake Ruby."
"'The E-Starr'? What kind of moniker is that for a gladiator?"
"According to his bio, Jake Ruby is an accomplished e-wrestler and has been for many years, despite his young age."
There's silence for a few moments.
"E-wrestler? What in the dar'yaim is an e-wrestler?"
"From what I can gather on the 'Net, an e-wrestler is one that writes about wrestling, in essence pretending to be a wrestler instead of actually wrestling. Apparently Jake Ruby has been successful enough in e-wrestling to believe himself capable of doing the real thing."
A silence not unlike the depths of space lasts for about ten seconds before both disembodied voices burst out laughing. It takes nearly two full minutes for the two to subside enough to continue their banter regarding the unlucky e-wrestler that gets to test his mettle against the mystery man.
"Jake Ruby, those that write about something are one of two breeds. Either they are writing from personal experience and can back up each and every scrap of literature they put down or they write with no experience and no chance of ever actually living up to what it is they persue in their fantasy realm."
"Take myself, for example. I've not put words down anywhere beyond simple notes and letters when they've been necessary. Beyond that, I keep track of my contracts. When I'm old and can no longer scour places such as Action Packed Wrestling, I may release my memoirs, but until then, I act, I don't daydream."
"To give you a bit of insight, 'E-Starr', I am currently under contract to a being that has asked to remain anonymous. I've been tasked to come here and obtain the biggest prize that Action Packed Wrestling has to offer - the APW World Championship."
"That title is as good as yours, V."
"Once it's in my grasp, Dia - which will not be long in coming - I will have to turn it over to my employer as per our contract."
"You'll still be able to relish in liberating it from that piece of osik Sergeant Kenny Lombardo."
"The Sergeant doesn't yet deserve our derision, Dia. In time, he will stand across the ring from me and the inevitable will happen. I will best him in single combat to capture the APW World Championship."
There's a sound reminiscent of a kiss and Dia exhales with a soft purring sound.
"First up, Jake Ruby, your tenure with Action Packed Wrestling is about to come to an end. I've studied up on this form of gladiatorial combat over the past six months and there's little chance of you coming out ahead of me. My training, my livelihood, depends upon it."
"Prepare yourself to trattok'o, chakaar!"
Whatever those last words to Jake Ruby were, they were spoken in a tone anything but friendly. Was there an image to fade to black upon, it would happen at this time...
