“I knew I’d find you here.”
Turning around Chris Hart looks right into the smiling face of Amy Noble. Around the two, the surf slowly crashes against the beach as Chris Hart sits alone, the sun beginning to fall just beyond the horizon and the moon begins to creep ever higher in the sky. Amy puts her hand on Chris shoulder and kicks her feet out, plopping down next to him in the sand and kicking innumerable fine granules up onto the bare legs of Chris.
“I would’ve thought my calls were more important than the view?” Amy asks, jesting Chris as he turns back and looks at the sun.
“I lost my phone” Chris flatly responds as he reaches next to him at the pile of rocks he had collected and fires one out into the water, skipping it five times before it begins to plummet to the depths.
“Right,” Amy responds, “because you’re hung like a stallion and that’s what’s causing the bulge in your pocket.” Amy chortles to herself as Chris reaches into the pocket of his surf shorts and pulls out his I-Phone, the message ‘five missed calls’ flashing at him on the screen. Bowing his head slightly, he drops it back into his pocket as he glances at Amy momentarily.
“I’m not getting involved Amy.” Chris says with an ounce of desperation in his voice, unequivocally wanting to avoid the war between the two Noble’s.
“That’s not why I’m here,” Amy says as she shakes her head at Chris. “I wouldn’t miss your big night for anything.” Chris turns and fixes her with a gaze, catching the emphasis on ‘your’ in her previous statement as he blindly skips another rock across the water before starting to chuckle.
“You’re still that upset with him?” Chris jests as he playfully punches Amy in the arm. Amy immediately retaliates and tosses a fistful of sand at Chris who throws his arms up defensively, trying to keep as much sand out of his eyes as possible. As it falls back to the ground, Chris leans over and grabs a hold of Amy and drags her into the sand. The two begin to wrestle for a moment before Amy ends up pinning Chris’ shoulders down as she straddles him and finds herself staring right into the legs of Hannah Storm.
“Is this a bad time?” Hannah asks shocked at the sight of Chris Hart, best friend of Kurt Noble, fooling around with his wife. Immediately Amy straightens up, rolling off of Chris and shakes her head as she stares at Hannah in shock.
“I … we … who are you?” Amy responds as Chris rolls over and brushes the sand out of his hair.
“Hannah Storm, I’m an interviewer for Action Packed Wrestling and I was hoping to get an interview with your prior to Rasslemania” Hannah says, the shocked expression turning into a sweet smile.
“I don’t do interviews.” Chris responds in a monotone expression.
“I was just hoping I could get a comment from the leader of Team Overdrive …” Hannah begins before Chris interjects.
“I’m not the leader of Team Overdrive Hannah. There’s a reason I’m here right now
and not stuck in some mouldy gym making final preparations with my teammates.”
“I know Chris, everyone’s been hearing you say that for the past month however your performance so far in Action Packed Wrestling, your only loss coming against Undisputed Championship contender Johnny Rebel has most people assuming that you’re going to be the one to lead Overdrive to victory.” Hannah states as Chris looks at her and immediately his disposition turns slightly dour.
“I’m not a leader” Chris scowls, before pushing himself off the ground and up to his feet and begins walking away, leaving Amy behind for a moment before she begins to chase after him.
“Chris,” she calls out, “why …”
“Why what?” Chris angrily snaps as he turns on his heels and shoots daggers at Amy, catching her totally off guard and causing Hannah Storm to recoil slightly as she observes from distance.
“What’s the matter Chris?” Amy calmly states as she approaches Chris, not allowing the menacing glare to faze her at all. Amy reaches out and looks to gently rub his face but Chris swats her hand away.
“Don’t touch me Amy” Chris growls.
“Chris …” Amy stutters as her heart nearly skips a beat, caught totally off guard by the reaction of Chris, unlike anything she’s ever seen from him.
“You know what happened the last time we were here Amy? Chris asks as Amy shakes her head in the affirmative but that doesn’t stop Chris. “Two years ago, Kurt Noble and I squared off in Miami in a match that was supposed to determine who was the best in the world. Everyone expected the match to be a clash of the titans, a battle between the good of Kurt Noble, who despite all his faults was still fighting the good fight for every fan who showed up, and the bad of Chris Hart, the man who had broken Robbie Venom’s neck in cold blood, who had vowed to put an end to the career of Kurt Noble, and was on a mission to take down the wrestling world single handed.
“No one knew what to expect from me coming off the lay off and when I stepped into the ring and stared across at Noble we both realized that we were never going to be the same. Yes, Kurt beat me. Yes, he was able to walk out victorious and seemingly send me back into oblivion but something happened in that match Amy. We came to a realization that we weren’t all that different, that when Kurt had said we were just like a coin, essentially the same but with two different ways of going about things he was spot on. The respect that was forged in that match lead to the creation of Noble-Hart, it was solely responsible for the introduction of the wrestling world to the most dominant tag team ever, and to what we could accomplish if we were given the chance.
“Rasslemania was supposed to be that chance for us Amy. Kurt was ready to finally stand at the pinnacle, taking his rightful place atop the wrestling world with the APW Undisputed Championship around his waist while I was right next him, having taken Action Packed Wrestling by storm and being the reason that Overdrive was victorious over Asylum. Kurt’s still got his opportunity, his destiny is laid out before him and is firmly in his control but mine is simply hanging in the balance, no matter what I do someone else has the potential to impact my fate.” Chris exhales as Amy looks at him, not quite certain what to make of the change in Chris’ attitude.
“And they have Amy. Look at what everyone’s been saying about the Overdrive vs. Asylum match? There’s no animosity between the two groups, that there hasn’t been the bloodletting one would expect given the hatred you would have figured to see grow as each faction attacked the other. Despite the fact that there are three other members of ‘Team Overdrive’, I’m the one having to answer the questions. I’m the one being forced into the role of a leader and that’s not what I came to do.
“How come no one’s going to Donovan Caine and asking him how come ‘Old Man’ Frank Cannon hasn’t found himself in a shallow grave? How come Yarmouth isn’t being stopped from training with his father to answer questions about Matt Matlock and his condition after his vicious assault of him that never happened? What about Warren Peace simply being absent without leave as opposed to making sure that Billy Pepsi appreciates the fact that, because he’s an Asylum superstar, he is naturally inferior to every single member of the Overdrive roster?
“It’s absolutely baffling to me Amy, why, over the past three weeks I’ve been bothered at all times of the day. When I’m trying to sleep, when I’m trying to relax, when I’m trying to enjoy an evening with my best friend in the world, why I’m not being the leader of a team whose members I didn’t get to choose and are in this match solely to advance their own careers.
“You don’t appreciate just how frustrating it is when you almost resent your teammates less than your opponents. When you’d rather be a member of the opposing team because that way you don’t have to team with Donovan Caine who’s greatest weapon is his ability to bore someone into a slumber. He’s some faux intellectual, a failed attempt at someone who is supposed to send shivers up your spine at the thought of him doing something but instead all he does is make you appreciate the fact that Asylum has Megastars that are able to get their point across without needing to slit their wrists and generally act like a moody teenage twat.
“People don’t understand how frustrating it is not knowing whether Warren Peace is going to actually show up and if he does whether he’s going to be in the right frame of mind to not only compete but be successful. I’m good Amy, but I’m not good enough to take on four men myself and I need Warren Peace to show up and for one night, be what everyone thinks he could be. A force to be reckoned with, someone who with a strong showing tonight would find himself catapulting towards the top of Action Packed Wrestling as oppose to someone synonymous with Pence Weatherlight who could, and should be amazing but simply wasn’t able to commit, or worse Tyler Graves who’s just an absolute waist of fucking space.
“I shouldn’t be expected to lead a grown man who’s incapable of thinking for himself. It’s mentally draining knowing that at the end of the day I’m teaming with someone like Yarmouth who got absolutely destroyed by Blade at Survive and Conquer and whose answer was to use his dad as his trainer. Rasslemania isn’t going to simply be about the brawns of the two teams, there’s strategy involved; brains are going to be just as, if not more, important as our strength and skill yet I’m being forced to join forces with someone with a borderline retard level IQ. My father raised me and I ended up being a failure, losing my surname and I’m going to bring him back to get me over the hump? It’s ludicrous Amy!” Chris is nearly beside himself as Amy looks at him and slowly begins to put two and two together as in the distance; Hannah Storm is taking everything in with a small handheld camcorder.
“It’s absolutely awful that I barely know anything about my opponents. That the only scouting I’ve been able to do is watching them two weeks ago listening to Reginald Schmidt put the team together. That my preparation has been about making sure that I’m the best and not knowing what Matt Matlock is all about in the ring. For all I know he could be the second coming of Jesus fucking Christ in the ring, or he could be someone that should rejoin Angela Landsbury on day time television.
“I don’t know whether Billy Pepsi is someone that I should be worried about because everything I’ve heard about him is that he’s a champ in the making, or whether he’s a clown who’s taken mediocre talent and attached a soft drink company to his name to make him stand out amongst the millions of generic peons he’d otherwise be lumped with.
I have no clue whether Frank Cannon is someone like Senator Steven Phillips or Kurt Noble who can compete at an advanced age or whether they need to be sent back to the geriatric ward and treated for his lunacy that made him even think that he could compete at this level.
All I know Amy is that at Rasslemania, my opportunity is hanging in the balance. Everything I’ve fought for up and to this point is going to come to a head and I have no control. All I can do is go out and do what I do best and hope that works. That’s what the matter is Amy.”
Chris reaches out and is about to backhand Amy as Hannah Storm looks on in shock and shuts the camcorder off and takes off - before Chris cracks a smile and Amy does as well.
